2025 Recap on Los Angeles Events the Sustainability Committee Participated In
At the April Local 600 Member Friday event, the Local 600 Sustainability Committee hosted an e-waste recycling event, along with inviting Green Spark Group and Greenwave to come chat and showcase the sustainable production practices they have been implementing on set. We had a hands-on demonstration of a portable e-generator and also handed out free battery testers and hygrometers. We had over 40 members attend, and we were told this was one of the largest turnouts for a Member Friday in LA.
At the Spring Camera Department Yard Sale at Local 600, the Local 600 Sustainability Committee collected 576 lbs of e-waste. The electronics were picked up by Homeboy Industries for proper recycling. Working items were available for members to take for free. We partnered with the Costume Designers Guild as well, and they offered a free rack of clothing and collected textiles for recycling through the Homeboy Threads program.
At the Hollywood Climate Summit in June, Local 600 Sustainability Committee member Alex Coyle represented the Local 600 Sustainability Committee at an Industry Sustainability Roundtable. This roundtable included both unions and the studios. There are plans for this to be an ongoing conversation in an attempt to find long-term solutions to our industry’s contribution to climate change.
At the IATSE All-In Mixer in October, members from Local 600, 44, 80, and 892 Sustainability Committees had a blast sharing our “Sustainable Smarts & Stakes” game with attendees. Amongst the fun, we talked with members how they had made/seen their sets be made greener. Native wildflower seeds were given to game winners, and a $25 gift card was raffled off at the end of the night.
On November 22, the Western Region Sustainability Committee collaborated with the Costume Designers Guild to host a textiles and electronics recycling event at the CDG Flea Market in LA. We collected 72 lbs of electronics, 6.5 lbs of lightbulbs, 18 lbs of batteries, and 1 lb of school supplies, which came to a total of 97.5 lbs diverted from landfills.
