Passing of Bruce MacCallum

14 June 2017

It is with great sadness that Local 600 announces veteran Camera Operator and longtime union activist Bruce MacCallum passed away in Los Angeles this past Monday evening.

Bruce, a fixture on sets in New York, started his entertainment industry career in 1973 as a personal assistant to Dustin Hoffman.  From there he moved into the camera department where he honed his craft as a longtime Camera Assistant and Operator for over 40 years.  Among his most notable features were "All That Jazz" (1979), "Witness" (1985), "The Silence of the Lambs" (1991), "I am Legend" (2007), and "The Adjustment Bureau" (2011).  More recently he was working in television on "The Night Of" and "The Blacklist".

During those years, Bruce helped train and mentor many of our members, including Bobby Brown, Jay Levy, Chris Silano and Chaim Kantor.  In addition, Bruce was always a union man, joining Local 644 in 1976 and serving his union in various capacities before and after the merger that created Local 600, including as a Local 600 National Assistant Secretary-Treasurer between 2007 and 2016.  Bruce's final weekend was spent at a Local 600 National Board Meeting where the Board committed to purchase a permanent office space in New York, a further testament to Bruce who believed in the vision of a strong national union and was dedicated to doing what was best for his fellow members.

Bruce is survived by his wife of 32 years, Linda.  Donations in his name may be made to your favorite charity.  Bruce enjoyed nature and wildlife and would be honored by your contributions to appropriate foundations, either on his behalf or your own.
