Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Floods, Lightning, Heat and Ice - Working Safely in the Southeast
Friday, Oct. 4 | 2:00 - 3:00 pm | Workshop, Pinewood Atlanta Studios

Five years ago, the tragedy of “Midnight Rider” occurred, costing Sarah Jones her life and leaving others with serious injuries. It’s a sober reminder that location safety requires thinking though every possibility, every time. Weather is one of those key safety issues that requires careful consideration and crews working in the southeast face nearly every weather hazard imaginable. Does counting down from a lightning strike really work? How should productions be tracking nearby storms? What are best practices when temperatures hit triple digits or sink into negative numbers? What contingency plans should be in place to ensure everyone returns home safely? Join the IATSE Safety Committee’s lead safety specialist and Locals 600 and 479 for a discussion of the latest guidance and protocols for handling mother nature when she closes in on your production.

Speakers:
Kent Jorgensen, IATSE Safety Committee Chair and Occupational Health and Safety Instructor
Kevin Amick, Director of Education and Training, IATSE Local 479

Moderator: Michael Chambliss, Production Technology Specialist/Business Representative, ICG IATSE Local 600

By the Seat of Their Pants - How Unscripted Camera Teams Score the Shots
Saturday, Oct. 5 | 11:00 am - 12:00 pm | Workshop, Pinewood Atlanta Studios

Unscripted TV shows place uniquely challenging demands on below-the-line filmmakers. Unscripted camera teams rarely know how the story will unfold and where the action is going to be next. With no opportunity for second takes and no room for technical errors, they reflexively shoot for a multi-camera cut while trying to steer clear of other camera frames. Learn from top unscripted directors of photography, camera operators and camera assistants how they develop their instincts and sharpen their skills to choreograph compelling stories extemporaneously, in real-time. Learn how they collaborate with each other and with audio mixers to deliver network quality work for a genre that’s become a TV mainstay.

Speakers:
Jessica Grizzell, Camera Assistant
Brian Hall, Camera Operator
Rey Miranda, Camera Operator
Chris Flores, Camera Operator

Moderator: Michael Chambliss, Production Technology Specialist/Business Representative, ICG IATSE Local 600
