Sarah Jones Internship Recipient

Meet Becca Bennett, the 2016 Sarah Jones Internship Recipient:

A career behind the camera is anything but a dog’s life. Sometimes a dog can even help get your career started.

In preparing her video application for the 2016 Sarah Jones Opportunity internship and training program, Becca Bennett turned to her 4-year-old German Shepherd-Golden Retriever mix Marlette to sing – or maybe woof -- her praises.

“There’s a quote, ‘Try to see yourself as your dog sees you,’” said Bennett. “It’s kind of awkward to talk about yourself, but a dog really sees you as this good person. So I kind of wanted to mix it up [in the video], and make it a little more narrative.”

Thanks in part to that application video (viewable here) Bennett begins her 20-week paid internship with SIM Digital this week, immersing herself in the world of camera. The opportunity will conclude with Bennett working on the set of “The Vampire Diaries,” one of the TV series that Jones worked on before her tragic death in 2014.

A native Georgian like Jones, Bennett developed a love of video from the age of 10, saving up her money to buy a Canon handheld and shooting everything from her sister’s amateur sitcom to family gatherings.

Since graduating from the University of Georgia with degrees in mass media arts and political science, Bennett has worked as a production assistant, camera operator and assistant editor on a handful of projects.

“I have always been interested in the process behind TV, and I think camera gives you a lot of control and really helps translate what you want to be seeing,” Bennett said. “It’s versatile and fulfilling. You get to really feel proud of your product and of what you create.”

Even before applying for the internship, Bennett followed the circumstances of Jones’s life and career. She is proud to continue her legacy.

“Speaking to everybody on the set of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ was such a learning experience,” Bennett said. “I am so glad they’re carrying Sarah Jones’ memory forward.”
